The End of an Era

I am sad to announce that I will be moving my blog from LJ to blogger. LJ has been great, but what I want to do with this blog is easier to do on blogger and free. I will keep my account here, but my Entries will be continued here:

diarydad.bennionz.com

Thanks for reading my LJ and I hope to see you on blogger.

Grown Up

When did we grow up?

I remember when I was young that I thought about growing up and what that would be like. I'm now working on 32 and I am wondering when the grown up switch was flipped. I didn't flip it. I was sitting at dinner today and I was correcting the behavior of my oldest son and it popped into my head that he would see me as I saw my father. so tonight as I have gone about the various activities I have been involved in I have been a little preoccupied by that.

I don't feel like my father. My father is in his mid fifties. Even if I think back to my earliest memories of my father, he is still someone that is twenty-five years older than I am. So then I take a close look at myself and realize that I am the man my father was 25 years ago (almost at least I am not gay and/or questioning my sexuality), I am making big decisions that affect the lives of at least three other people. I have a wife who I dearly love and want to help her be happy, and as crazy as it may sound I want to wake up next to her fifty years from now. I have two little boys that I can't wait to see when I get home and it makes my day when i hear them call me Daddy.

I don't know who flipped it, or when the grown up switch was flipped, but it has; and though it will be hard at times for me to deal with I am glad it has because I like being a Dad/Husband/Man.

It feels me so...

The boys and I spent the whole day together today. Shell was off participating in the culmination of her work on the board of the Successful Mothering Convention.

As the boys and I were getting together our things so we could get outside for a bit, Will said something to me that has become something of a catchphrase for him. He told me, as I was putting on his gloves, that his gloves are so nice because they "feel me so warm". obviously that means that they keep him warm. Warm enough in fact that we go out and throw snow about.

... and you know what our little adventure "feeled me so warm" too (on the inside that is).

Sick Kids

Nothing is more frustrating then watching your kids suffer through a cold. They can't sleep, but they are dog tired. They are hungry but their throats are sore. They want to stop coughing but can't. They have a steady flow of snot and chapped noses so they don't want to wipe it away.

Add to it the lack of sleep the parents are getting.

I love my wife and she is going the extra mile taking care of these boys... despite the fact that it looks like she might be catching their cold. I am lucky to have married a woman who is such a wonderful mother. I hope my kids will always know how wonderful their mother is.

My kids are troopers too. Will has tried so hard not to let the cold get him down. Thank goodness for the Hap Palmer movies we got from the library to distract him. Walker is a funny cat. He is just trying so hard to pretend that he isn't sick....

Here's to that apple a day.....

Meiers Briggs

I just took a modified Meiers Briggs test... It's not very kind in it's results... but as usual my results were:

Scumbag- ENFP

73% Extraversion, 86% Intuition, 33% Thinking, 33% Judging

I have a feeling you're not going to like this much. Do I care? No.
How do I know? It's because you hate criticism. You love to be loved and you'll do anything to be accepted.

Unfortunately for you, I can see right through your insincere compliments and over-the-top greetings. No matter what you do, I'll always hate you for what you are. An arrogant, unstable, overly enthusiastic scumbag.

I bet you're pretty proud of your accomplishments, huh? You seem to achieve at whatever you put your little mind too. Trust me. Nobody likes the person who is good at everything. NOBODY LIKES YOU.

This might also have something to do with the fact that you're a cheating machine. You're just not the type of person to make long-term commitments. You enjoy seeing "what could be", rather than being satisfied with "what is." This, of course, means you often leave others in the dust while you seek out another lover.

Well, at least you're not the one left in the dust.

Unfortunately, when you're the one lying in the gutter with a bloody knife in your back, you might think differently.

*****************

If you want to learn more about your personality type in a slightly less negative way, check out this.

*****************

The other personality types are as follows...

Loner - Introverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving

Pushover - Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging

Criminal - Introverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving

Borefest - Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging

Almost Perfect - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving

Freak - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging

Loser - Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving

Crackpot - Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging

Clown - Extraverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving

Sap - Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging

Commander - Extraverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving

Do Gooder - Extraverted Sensing Thinking Judging

Busybody - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging

Prick - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving

Dictator - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging

The State of Daddy Address

The other day Shell and I went into the department of health to get on WIC. As part of the process we had to have a physical done for the boys. All over the WIC office there were signs posted saying that children's diapers needed to be dry before going into the lab. So Shell and I decided to split the difference and take care of one child each. I went to take Will to the bathroom to change his diaper. First of all it was really difficult to find the men's bathroom. when I finally find it (halfway across the building) there is no changing table. This has become one of my pet peeves. It seems that in all the places that there should be facilities for childcare in Men's rooms there never are. In Salt Lake City, there are places like the Airport and apparently the health department

I started out being upset at the health department and was going to write a huge rant about them. I thought about it for a while and realized that my anger was misplaced. I should be upset at us fathers. There are facilities in women's bathrooms because more women have asked for them. It seems men are more likely to let their wives take care of the children's needs when they are out than to request that facilities be made more available for men. I think that is a shame.

It my seem silly that I am making a big deal about this, but I think it is a big deal. What's in a dirty diaper (besides poop)? There is a bond formed between a mother and child that is amazing. I believe that there is more to that bond than breast feeding. If you have been involved with your children like I have been you may have been the first person your child saw in their life. I personally believe the bond between mother and child is one that can be formed between father and child as well. Breastfeeding gives women an advantage in forming that bond, but dirty diapers can be a father's in. That bond I believe is created through meeting a child's needs. When a child is hungry we feed it, when they are dirty, we clean it, when it is hurt we care for it, etc... In these circumstances, as a father, how often do you help with these needs, and how often does your child's mother take care of them. You may play with your child and have fun, but when their needs arise, who is the one to resolve those needs? If you aren't sharing the need resolution for the child 50/50 with the child's mother you may want to change your fathering practices because children know who to turn to in their time of need and I believe that is how that bond is created between mother and child... I also believe that a father can share in that bond, and it may be as simple a changing a dirty whenever and where ever your child needs it. So next time you go into a men's room in a public place and there are no facilities to allow you to take care of your child, say something to the management, fill out a card, do something. Don't let them take away opportunities to build your father-child relationship

Guess Who's Back...

Well, I am no doubt a slacker. My wife posted a comment on my Myspace profile that I needed to get back on the stick.

So my family is back in town, from their long trip to California, to visit Grandma and Grandpa. It seems like they had a great time. If you want to check out their adventures. Shelly has been keeping a blog for the boys here.

I have some cool stuff coming down the pipe for those of you that are interested. Now that I know how to do it I will be doing a Diary Dad podcast. I hope it will add to the endeavor I started with this LiveJournal.

This is a late valentine but better late then never eh...

I really wanted to take a moment to just say how much I adore my wife, and how much she means to me. I love being a Dad, as any of you that have read this journal can see. There is no way I could be doing this thing that I love so much with out her. She has made a great deal of sacrifice to allow us to have this wonderful family unit that we do. I hope that everyone out there can find some one as wonderful as I have.

I don't deserve her, but I'm glad she's mine.

Missing the Fam

Well you would think that i would have written something before now, what with all the things going on the past few months. It is amazing how a bunch of little things will eat up your time.

Shell and the boys are down in California, visiting Shell's parents for about a month. So I have been alone for a bit, Two weeks this Thursday! It sounds like they are having a whale of a time down there. Shell has started A LiveJournal for the boys called Bennion Boys. I am devouring every entry she (or the boys) makes on it.

I have really come to realize how much my family means to me over this time. I can't imagine life without them.

Thank God for cellphones, the internet, and webcams.

Potty Time

Well here it is one of the proudest moments in any parent's life. The first time your child successfully uses the potty. Every time I have bathed Will or taken him in the shower with me I have set him on his potty seat to let him get used to it. Yesterday was the first time I did it that he didn't cry over the experience. So of course I ran right out and got the camera, because every good parent needs to have a picture of their kid on the potty, and as you can see above I now possess one of Will. The neat thing, if you can call it that, is that as I was taking this picture he actually did his first pee pee on a potty so not only did I get the picture but I actually took a picture of him doing the pee pee. Of course you need me to tell you, because there is no way to tell that from the picture.

yay for daddyhood.

Been Lame

Wow, I have been so lazy. I am about as good at keeping an online journal as I am a pen and paper one. I don't know if anyone has been coming to read the word from the womb updates, if you have I will be updating those so that you can come back soon and read all of them. Bare with me school, work, and family all supersede this endeavor. I think it is important, I just haven't got around to it yet.

I am looking for Jobs now that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel at school. I have been looking to find a job that will move me and my family out of Utah. Shell and I would like to see about a job that would take our family to Hong Kong for a few years. I have no idea what job that might be though. Shelly is really urging me to look into Disneyland Hong Kong. So I need to figure out how to get my foot in that door. Another avenue we have been discussing is looking for a job in Vancouver, I have less of an idea of what to do along that vein, so that will take some research too. When to do it all...?

Day 82 : 184 to go

The Word From the Womb:

Much Progress has taken place in the development of the baby's mouth. The bony palate, or roof of the mouth, has been complete for some weeks, the sucking muscles are filling out the cheeks, the tooth buds are present under the gums, The Esophagus and windpipe are present, and the larynx, or voicebox, is present. By today, the bey's salivary glands will begin to function. Over the next three days, the baby will make begin to make breathing, sucking, and swallowing motions.

Baby Center.com - Your 10 month-old this week:

As babies begin to pay more attention to what's going on around them, it's not unusual for them to develop new fears. In fact, it's a normal developmental stage. Your baby may suddenly cry and cling to you upon hearing even familiar sounds such as the dog barking next door or the doorbell ringing. Your job is to provide lots of hugs and kisses. Comfort and reassure her that you're standing by and all's right with the world.

I have a couple other websites I need to put some work on a couple other websites I maintain. No rest for the wicked I guess. Two more days until Shell and Will come home Yay.

The Word from the Womb:

The baby is now quite active but it is still so small that it could easily move inside the egg of a goose.

Week 12 - Day 78 : 188 to go

I have been working on our website, www.bennionz.com, and with any luck I'll have all the updates done tonight. I'm adding a couple new photo galleries, a video, and the new Baby Bennion Birthday Guessing Game. So if you want to get a guess in go log on and submit one.

I bought a ticket for Shell and Will to fly home on Saturday. It'll be super good to have them back home.

Baby Center.com - 12 Weeks Pregnant

Your baby's hit the 2-inch mark (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce. Her face is beginning to look more human. Her eyes, which started out on the sides of her head, have moved closer together on her face, and her ears are near their final positions on the sides of her head. Your baby's intestines, which have grown so rapidly that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into her abdominal cavity about now. Her kidneys are secreting urine into her bladder. Her nerve cells have been multiplying rapidly, and synapses (neurological pathways in the brain) are forming. Your baby may have acquired more reflexes by now, including sucking, and she'll even squirm if you prod your abdomen, though you still won't be able to feel her movement for
several weeks

The Word from the Womb:

The baby's hand is becoming more and more functional. the baby is beginning to use its thumb in opposition to the other fingers. Over the next three days, the external sex structures will become clearly visible.

Day 74 : 192 to go

I finally got my journal up to date yesterday. It helped that I downloaded a program for updating my journal here at work. I wasn't very good at doing a daily update during our first pregnancy, but then I was trying to manage school and helping with Shell's health. So I am back dating entries as I do them now. I actually did quite a few entries back then as I am finding out, so it really amounts to filling in the gaps.

When I talked to Shell last night she told me that William started to do two of the signs we have been teaching him. Shell read about baby sign language and has been real gung ho about it. To be honest she is the real reason he is learning the signs, I don't always remember to use them. I make a good college effort though. The signs that he did yesterday are:

More

Milk

I'll be honest I can't wait for that camera to get to shell so she can start capturing some of these moments for me.

I am technically on Day 5 of of the first phase of the South Beach Diet. All be honest though I kinda fudged on days 3 and 4 so I may need to extend phase 1 two days. It is a really good diet plan though. Shell and I started it right after Thanksgiving and I lost about 10 pounds in the first two weeks. Since I have started watching my weight last summer I am down about 20 pounds. I started South Beach again and I was at 223 lbs so will see what the results are this time. My goal ultimately is to get myself down tto somwhere between 180-200 lbs.

Enough journal writing, I need to finish a paper for school

The Word from the Womb:

Over the next three days, the vocal cords will form in the baby's larynx. The baby will not be able to make sounds, however, or cry out loud, because sound travels through air, not fluid.

Day 73 - 193 to go

Shell called me last night, I guess Will has learned how to clap. I was just on the phone with her, and she had me talk to him for a minute like she always does, and I asked him to clap for me and he did. THe greatest part was that I heard his little clap.

So either I am going to buy us a new video camera online and have it shipped there, or she is going to go get one this weekend. We are going to get the Canon Elura 60. I can't wait to see the stuff he is learning.

The Word from the Womb

The placenta grows with the baby, but not as fast. At this point in development, it weighs around 1 ounce (28 g); at the time of birth, it will weigh between 1 and 2 pounds (448-896g).

Crawling

My wife called me Earlier today, she had taken Will to work where my Mom was going to meet them to take will for the day. She had left hi in her office and was talking to a student at her office. The student asked how old he was, and my wife said 7 months, and he said "Wow and he is already crawling?" Shell said that he was trying, and the student replied, "he looks like he's doing a good Job." Sure enough, my little boy was crawling. I haven't seen it for myself yet, but I plan to check it out in person tonight.
